Anton Terziev’s Cutting Down Dangerous Trees (2018) masterfully collapses the cliché of pop-iconography with a jolt of subversive wit. At first glance, the jet-black silhouette of a semi-automatic pistol—reminiscent of Warhol’s factory-made graphics—reads as a celebration of machismo. Yet the Cyrillic stencil on its slide, “РЕЖА ОПАСНИ ДЪРВЕТА” (“Cutting Down Dangerous Trees”), detonates that expectation: the weapon becomes an absurdist arborist’s tool, a savage pun on both gun-culture and environmental stewardship. In underlining its own artifice, Cutting Down Dangerous Trees invites viewers to reconsider the easy conflation of protection and aggression. It’s a razor-sharp pop-art riff that lingers long after the punch line.
