"Prequel" of Practice What You Preach artwork
This Year Will Be Different
In This Year Will Be Different, everyday objects—dumbbell weights, a baguette, and a stainless steel watch—are brought together in an ironic sculptural tableau that channels the spirit of readymade art. At first glance, the pairing of fitness equipment with a perishable staple and a sleek timepiece underscores the ubiquitous modern pressures to balance health, productivity, and indulgence. The baguette, wedged between the metal plates, stands as a humorous symbol of comfort and consumption, contrasting sharply with the rigorous discipline associated with weights. Meanwhile, the watch points toward the relentless march of time and the anxiety that drives our perpetual cycle of self-improvement.
By uniting these disparate items into a single form, the artist pokes fun at society’s collective appetite for easy fixes and quick results—mirroring our annual resolutions to “do better” while rarely confronting the deeper boundaries of our comfort zones. This conceptual layering of humor and critique aligns the work with the lineage of modern conceptualism, where the simple rearrangement of found objects can open a space for nuanced reflection on consumerism, inertia, and the underlying fears that often keep us from genuine change.
